The Diachronic-Synchronic Narrative Approach in Community Curation: An Anthropological Practice in Beijing Jieshan Community
POSTER PRESENTATION
Abstract: This study addresses the preservation of historical memory and the reconstruction of community identity within urban renewal, focusing on the risk of dissolution faced by local knowledge amid rapid urbanization. Integrating anthropological theories—Braudel’s long-term history, Lévi-Strauss’s semiotics—the research employs local archives and sensory ethnography to construct a narrative framework. Findings reveal that curatorial methods establish three narrative dimensions: historical-geographical continuity, material memory carriers, and the dismantling of psychological boundaries in governance. This structure fosters a dynamic field of local knowledge, merging personal memory, community symbols, and urban vision. The study highlights community curation as a “living archive,” offering both theoretical tools for urban renewal and practical means for cultural governance, transforming residents into co-narrators of community stories.
