The Sinicized Modernization of Rural Design: Dimensions, Topics, and Pathways in Rural Revitalization by the Beijing Communist Youth League

PRESENTATION

Abstract: Under the overarching context of comprehensively promoting rural revitalization and Sinicized modernization, the role and paradigm of rural design are confronting demands for high-quality innovation. This paper takes the Beijing Communist Youth League’s “Hundred Leagues Revitalize Hundred Villages” initiative as its research object. Through the analysis of over 70 rural design practices in the Beijing suburbs, it proposes three core dimensions for the modern transformation of rural design: a shift in the value dimension from prioritized development to multidimensional engagement; a shift in the process dimension from unidirectional leadership to pluralistic governance; and a shift in the logic dimension from exogenous input to endogenous adaptation. Building on this framework, the paper constructs three key topics: cultural empowerment, economic empowerment, and “ecology + governance” empowerment. Correspondingly, it proposes three implementation pathways: cultural decoding and translation, industrial integration and value enhancement, and collaborative co-creation and sustainable governance. The research demonstrates that through systematic innovation, rural design has achieved a transition from fragmented exploration to systematic construction, providing an operable theoretical framework and practical paradigm for rural revitalization.
